Kama'ehuakanaloa volcano (Hawaiian Islands): elevated seismic activity

The Kamaʻehuakanaloa volcano (formerly known as Lōʻihi Seamount), located offshore to the southeast of the Island of Hawaiʻi, experienced a period of increased seismic activity beginning around 02:00 local time on 21 January. The seismicity ended by 08:00 local time, and further earthquake swarm activity currently appears unlikely. A total of 16 earthquakes were recorded during the swarm, all with magnitudes of 0 or smaller, occurring at depths between 8 and 20 miles below sea level. The USGS has not received any reports from the Island of Hawaiʻi indicating these events were felt. Read all

HVO reported that Kamaehuakanaloa volcano (formerly Loihi Seamount), located offshore SE of the Island of Hawaii, began a period of heightened seismic unrest at around 1800 on 1 November. A swarm of more than 70 earthquakes occurred, with 32 events being greater than M 2.0 and two events greater than M 4.0. The largest earthquake, a M 4.3 event, occurred at 1205 on 2 November at a depth of 5.8 km (3.6 miles) below sea level and 4.8 km (3.0 miles) below the summit. Read all

An earthquake swarm began at Kama'ehuakanaloa at about 0200 on 16 July and was characterized by seismic tremor accompanied by pulses of seismic energy every 15-20 seconds. The pattern of elevated seismicity continued through at least 1453 on 17 July, the posting time of the HVO's information statement. A magnitude 4.2 earthquake was detected at Loihi volcano on 25 November. We will wait and see if the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory has any more information on this.
