The ash cloud expands and small pyroclastic flows develop from dense ash both ejected and whirled up by impacts on the upper flanks of the cone. (Photo: Jorge Santos)

A spectacular geologic outcrop at the western Yasur caldera rim exposes a 3-4 meter thick, solid red deposit which in fact probably is a deposit from a spatter-rich pyroclastic flow, welded so well together that it appears like a lava flow. A fine-grained base layer and loose or poorly welded spatter at the top can be seen as well.
Btw, very similar deposits can be observed on Santorini (e.g. "Upper Scoria 2") where they have become subjects of numerous studies and are now famous as perfect examples for this unusual (and previously unrecognized) type of pyroclastic flows. (Photo: Tom Pfeiffer)
